Synopsis

An empty circle of chairs waits for an audience and a group of actors to take their seats and begin the HIV Support Group session. The audience’s tension and unease, and the layout of the space, become key to recreating what these meetings were like. A realistic performance brings us a slice of life from that unfortunate era. Non-theatricality and closeness to documentary theatre are central to the staging. There is no stage without an audience, no actors without spectators, no effects outside the circle. The therapist, herself a member of the support group, welcomes everyone and sets some rules, and from there the monologues gradually find their space in this circle, where actors and spectators are part of the same cell, the same space.
